Common Coot: Clara, the Little Bird with a Big Attitude

Clara, our common coot, may not be the largest bird in the wetland exhibit, but she is undoubtedly the boldest. Known for her feisty demeanor, Clara doesn’t hesitate to defend her territory, often squawking and flapping her wings to ward off intruding ducks or herons. Despite her small size, she’s a crowd favorite because of her unique behavior and lively antics.

Visitors are always amused by her "walking on water" trick, a skill that helps her quickly escape predators or assert dominance over rivals. Her long, lobed toes allow her to sprint across the surface of the water with surprising speed. Keepers frequently share fun facts about Clara’s diet—she’s a fan of aquatic insects, snails, and tender shoots of water plants. Watching her forage underwater with her head bobbing rhythmically is both fascinating and educational. Clara’s charm lies in her spunky personality, proving that even the smallest creatures can make a big impression.
