Sumatran Tiger: Raya, the Forest Guardian

Raya, our Sumatran tiger, is a rare and captivating beauty. Native to the dense rainforests of Sumatra, this critically endangered species is known for its smaller size and darker coat with closely spaced stripes. Raya was born in a conservation breeding program and arrived at our zoo to raise awareness about the plight of her species.

Raya’s enclosure is designed to resemble her natural habitat, complete with thick vegetation, a flowing stream, and plenty of climbing platforms. One of her favorite activities is swimming—a unique trait among tigers—and she spends hours playfully splashing in the water or pouncing on floating logs. Visitors are often fascinated by her agility as she leaps effortlessly from one perch to another. Her keepers share that Raya is particularly clever, quickly figuring out puzzle feeders designed to challenge her hunting instincts. Her presence highlights the urgent need to protect the dwindling rainforests of Sumatra.
